The Dunney Diaries: Un Techo Para Mi Pais

Es algunos días después desde regresé de dos días/noches en el sur de Bogotá construyendo casas con Un Techo Para Mi Pais, y he había tiempo para recuperarse. Entonces ahora, porque fue ese gringo loco en la televisión en Colombia?

Encontré Un Techo Para Mi Pais antes vine a Bogotá cuando estaba investigando en Montreal y cuando un nuevo amigo de Bogota me dice que él estaba viniendo por una construcción para el fin de semana yo estaba excitado venir. Con un poquito preparación en viernes por la noche encontramos a la Universidad Javeriana, listo ir.

Con 800 voluntarios estábamos separado a grupos ir a los différentes barrios del sur de Bogotá. Nuestros grupo fue al sur a las montañas a un barrio llama Altos del Piño. Llegamos a nuestras 5 estrella acomodación tarde en la noche de viernes y, después algunas formalidades, ponemos las bolsas de dormir en el muy frío piso concreto. Estábamos quedamos a un escuela local en el barrio, cerca el sitio de la construcción.

Sábado por la mañana nos levantamos temprano, sueño pero listo trabajar. Después conociendo Leidy (la ortografía?) y Jon, de la nueva casa, Todo el día sábado cavamos, excavamos y preparamos el sitio para estar por la casa. Después 12 horas, trabajando a la noche, excavando en piedra estábamos muy cansado con espaguetis brazos, lo era hora de terminar el día.

Domingo fue un otro día de más acción. De quemadura del sol a la lluvia torrencial, haciendo los caminos del tierra a barro y ríos, 100s de voluntarios trabajaron sin parando todo del día. Domingo por la noche tarde y muy cansado, finalmente ponemos el clavo último en el techo y dio los llaves a Leidy y Jon.

Encontré muchos personas maravillosas y tengo mucho suerte estar parte de la construcción y ayudar Leidy y Jon, las familias, niños lindos y la comunidad de Altos del Piño.

Creo que los fotos dan una buena pintura del fin de semana en el sur de Bogotá.

It's been a few days after I returned from two days/evenings in southern Bogota building houses with Un Techo Para Mi Pais and I've had a little time to recover. So now, why was that crazy gringo on the news in Colombia?

I found Un Techo Para Mi Pais before I came to Bogotá when I was doing some pre-trip research in Montreal and when a new friend from Bogota told me he was going for a construction for the coming weekend I was excited to come, get involved and see what it was all about. With a little preparation on Friday night we met at the Universidad Javeriana, ready to go.

With 800 volunteers we were separated into groups to go into different neighbourhoods of the south of Bogota. Our group went south into the mountains to a neighbourhood called Altos del Piño. We arrived at our 5 star accommodation late at night on Friday and, after some formalities, I put my sleeping bag directly onto the freezing concrete floor ready for a restless night's sleep. We were staying at a local school in the district, near the construction site, which was an experience in itself.

Saturday morning we arose early, sleepy but ready to work. After meeting Leidy (spelling?) and Jon, of the new house, all day Saturday we dug, excavated and prepared the site for the new house. After 12 hours and working into the night digging in rock we were very tired with spaghetti arms and it was time to end the day.

Sunday was another day of more action. From sunburn to the torrential rain, which made the hilly dirt roads turn into mud and rivers, while 100s of volunteers worked all day without stopping. Late Sunday night and very tired, we finally put the last nail in the roof and gave the keys over to Leidy and Jon.

I met many wonderful people and I am really lucky to be part of the construction effort and to help Jon and Leidy, the families, wonderful kids and the community of Altos del Piño.

I think the photos give a good picture of the weekend in the south of Bogotá.
